Cycles of My Being

Alex was part of a unique, COVID-era performance of “Cycles of My Being” composed by Tyshawn Sorey with lyrics by Terrance Hayes and Lawrence Brownlee in partnership with Opera Philadelphia. To watch the performance, click here.

Alex is proud to be a founding member of Black Orchestral Network, an artist lead initiative whose mission is to support Black orchestral musicians by Cultivating Community, Lifting Our Voices, and Telling Our Stories.

The Black Orchestral Network envisions a world where Black Orchestral musicians easily find reflections of themselves, and all their complexities, in the history and future of orchestral music.

From 2019-2023 Alex helped lead the YOLA National Institute, a program of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The program’s goal is to “bring people together who believe that music education has a powerful role to play in youth and community development”. Find out more here.

The Leading Tone was a community non-profit formed and led by Alex Laing from 2014 to 2018. The Leading Tone aimed to develop youth through music with after school programming.
